Can I read Holly as a standalone? ›

In that regard, this novel is a celebration of Holly's past as well as of Hodges's legacy, but there is enough context to allow it to work as a standalone for those who haven't followed Holly's story from the beginning.

Originally appearing in the Bill Hodges trilogy of novels (Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers and End of Watch), she later appears as a major supporting character in The Outsider and as the main character in If It Bleeds, a novella included in the collection of the same name, and the novel Holly.

Other places on the internet suggest reading the Mr Mercedes trilogy, Outsider, If It Bleeds, and then Holly.

Not mandatory, but highly suggest t least reading If It Bleeds before Holly. You'll get spoilers for the Bill Hodges Trilogy, but If It Bleeds leads directly into Holly.

Holly is not explicitly identified as autistic in the initial volume but is later described as having “Aspergers-like” tics, and the two actors who have played her on-screen — Justine Lupe in the “Mr. Mercedes” series and Cynthia Erivo in HBO's “The Outsider” — have both said they deliberately played her as autistic.

We were sorry to see a different actress play her in "The Outsider". While Cynthia Erivo did a great job, she did not, in our opinion, play the same character as the character played by Justine Lupe in the Mr. Mercedes series. Gary Oefinger One Holly story is enough.

Both screen adaptations dramatically de-age her, placing Holly at around her early thirties as of Mr. Mercedes, likely as a means to fully establish her as a surrogate daughter to Hodges in the first three books.
